Djalu special healing yirdaki in D, played by Vernon Marritjngu An awesome yirdaki cut by the master, worked on jointly with his son Vernon Marritjngu, and painted entirely by himself. Djalu doesn't often paint, preferring to craft instruments, but you can see he is no slouch with the paintbrush either. The tree from which this yirdaki was cut was massive, the raw log itself also incredibly large and heavy. It was worked on the very day it was cut, such was the enthusiasm that the Gurruwiwis had for this stick. Because Djalu had (temporarily) lost his personal instrument which he had used for many years and which has blessed and healed many people, this was to be the replacement. (Djalu later recovered his personal yirdaki, it was mistakenly sold but all solved now). A didgeridoo of this length, key and acoustic quality was said by Djalu to be suited for healing. Its tone is quite unlike anything I've played before, not sure if it comes through on this video, but the feeling from playing this stick is just absolutely astounding. Djalu had an off day when I made this recording, his lips were sore, but Vernon takes his place and plays it with the dignity and austerity it commands. My 5 stars to this instrument and video clip.
