There are two competing theories on how to win a general election in 2020. The first is to persuade the persuadables, the handful of swing voters in swing states in order to reach 270.
Words you need to know to understand the primary process:
+Primary election - an election held in which you select from a list of Democratic candidates who you want to be the Democratic nominee
+Caucus - Iowa is the best example of a caucus state. Rather than vote in private, Iowans meet at designated caucus sites in the evening and gather in groups divided by candidate
+General election - all states vote and count early ballots on the same day, November 3, 2020
+Closed primary - must be a registered Democrat to vote in your state’s Democratic primary/caucus
+Open primary - must ask at the polling site to vote in the Democratic primary, can do so regardless of your registered party affiliation
+Delegate - each state, based on population, is allocated a number of delegates to send to the Democratic National Convention. Delegates pledge to each candidate based on the percentage received in the primary/caucus in each state or territory (not winner-take-all)
+Superdelegate - an individual, usually a party leader or elected official, who is considered unpledged and can vote for any Democratic candidate. Superdelegates are chosen by Democratic party leadership. 2020 brings a change for the role of Superdelegates--Superdelegates will only vote at the Democratic National Convention if no one candidate has received a majority of Delegates from the primary elections

The Epic Story of the Deadliest Plague In History is a 2004 nonfiction book by John M. Barry that examines the 1918 flu pandemic, the worst pandemic in history. Barry focuses on what was occurring in the United States at the time and attempts to place it against the background of American history and within the context of the history of medicine.
American Society of Microbiology:
"Barry provides enormous insight into the very nature of science... The Great Influenza is a must read for its unnerving relevance to today's scientific challenges of emerging and reemerging diseases and the society's tragic confrontations with war and terrorism... alarming similarities to today... gripping."
Experts say officials need a 'plan B' for the 2020 elections in case the coronavirus continues to spread in the US.
While just 60 people in the US have been diagnosed with the Wuhan coronavirus, officials are warning the disease will likely "spread widely" in the US — a reality that could disrupt upcoming elections.
It's no secret that a slowing economy can deal a fatal blow to the candidacy of a sitting president. That's what happened in 1992 when Bill Clinton unseated President George H.W. Bush.

Joe Biden appears to have followed up his dominant Super Tuesday performance with another rout of the electoral map: Of the five states that have been called — Idaho, Michigan, Mississippi, and Missouri —Biden has won four of them, with massive victories in the two southern states. And though the Vermont senator is still holding on in the race, the map beyond Tuesday doesn’t look fantastic for Sanders. We’re tracking the results as they come in, as well as providing commentary and analysis, via live updates below.
President Trump has officially secured the 2020 Republican presidential nomination after victories in the Florida and Illinois primaries Tuesday, according to an Associated Press delegate count.
Trump surpassed the 1,276 delegates needed to secure the nomination two months earlier than he did in 2016, when he battled a huge field of rivals as an insurgent candidate.
..That makes Trump the undisputed Republican nominee as Democrats continue to wage a contested primary contest between former Vice President Joe Biden and Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders...

Coronavirus Election Calendar
As the coronavirus outbreak upends the presidential campaign, several states have moved to postpone their primary elections. We’re keeping track here.

Former Vice President Joe Biden argues that November's presidential election should not be delayed, even if the coronavirus pandemic forces changes to way voting is conducted.
"I'd much prefer to have on — you know, in-person voting, but it depends. It depends on the state of play," Biden told NBC's "Today" show in an interview that aired today.
The remarks from the likely Democratic presidential nominee represent his most firm insistence yet that the general election be conducted as scheduled. They come amid increasing uncertainty regarding the longevity of the ongoing public health crisis.
The disease's rapid spread in the U.S. has already upended voting in more than a dozen states where local elections officials have delayed their primaries, prolonging Biden's quest to seal his party's nomination.
Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers has issued a last-minute order halting in-person voting on Tuesday amid coronavirus concerns, calling for suspending the statewide and local elections until June 9.
“The virus directs us as to what our decision-making is, not human beings, and clearly I am following the science, as I always have,” Evers told us in an interview today. Evers said he heard from constituents relaying fear for their safety and their kids’ safety, as he tracked updates about the number of deaths and rate of infections in Wisconsin. “Given that, I felt that the governor is the one who has to step up and stand for those people that aren’t having their voices heard.”
The governor expects a court challenge from state Republicans, who this weekend rebuffed a late request that the GOP-controlled legislature take action to postpone the election. Evers said if Republicans don’t challenge the order, it will go into effect immediately.
Evers called the state legislature back for a special session and asked them to act to postpone the election, which includes the Democratic presidential primary and votes for state and local offices. The GOP-controlled legislature declined to do so, gaveling in and out of sessions in a matter of minute yesterday and today.
Bernie Sanders insists he has a “narrow path” to the nomination. But he and his aides refuse to say what it is.
A majority of the states and territories yet to vote rejected him in 2016. The national polls don’t offer much hope either — since Joe Biden defeated him in Arizona, Florida and Illinois on March 17, Sanders has trailed him by double-digits in every single national survey.
While it’s not yet mathematically impossible for him to win, Sanders would need to amass more than 60 percent of the remaining delegates to clinch the nomination — a mark he’s only hit in two states this year, Nevada and his home state of Vermont.
His path is so narrow that some of Sanders' senior aides have even advised him to consider dropping out, though not everyone in his inner circle feels the same way, according to people familiar with the situation.
Politico:Bernie Sanders endorsed Joe Biden during a surprise appearance on the former vice president’s livecast.
Sanders, who formally suspended his campaign last week, said he needed everyone in the United States — not just his supporters — to back Biden and make sure that Donald Trump becomes a one-term president.
“I will do all that I can to see that that happens, Joe,” Sanders pledged.
Cnn:Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders on Monday officially endorsed former Vice President Joe Biden for president. “Today, I’m asking all Americans ... to come together in this campaign to support your candidacy, which I endorse,” Sanders said to Biden during a livestream broadcast. The endorsement of Biden by his leading Democratic rival marks a key moment for Democrats as the party seeks to unify and turn its focus toward a November match-up with President Donald Trump.
washingtonpost : Sen. Bernie Sanders, who ended his presidential bid last week, endorsed Joe Biden on Monday. The independent senator from Vermont said on a live stream hosted by former vice president Joe Biden that he was endorsing Biden, the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee. “Joe, I know that there is an enormous responsibility on your shoulders right now, and it is imperative that all of us work together," Sanders said on the livestream.
Politico: Elizabeth Warren endorsed Joe Biden , the third big endorsement for the former vice president this week as Democrats unite for the general election.
"We're all in this together now," Warren said in a prerecorded video posted on Twitter. "And now, it’s up to all of us to help make Joe Biden the next president of the United States. Let’s get to work."
Warren has mostly stayed quiet about the Democratic primary since her withdrawal on March 5. By remaining neutral when the race had narrowed to Biden and her longtime progressive ally Sanders, she angered many parts of the left but also helped Biden clinch the nomination.

Primary elections test impact of protests, coronavirus on voting:
In the midst of a global pandemic and national protests over the death of George Floyd, eight states and the District of Columbia held primary elections on Tuesday.
Why it matters: Joe Biden, the presumptive Democratic nominee, needs to win 425 of the 479 delegates up for grabs in order to officially clinch the nomination. There are a number of key down-ballot races throughout the country as well, including a primary in Iowa that could determine the fate of Rep. Steve King (R-Iowa).
"It was an honor to compete alongside one of the most talented groups of candidates the Democratic party has ever fielded — and I am proud to say that we are going into this general election a united party," Biden said in a statement. "I am going to spend every day between now and November 3rd fighting to earn the votes of Americans all across this great country so that, together, we can win the battle for the soul of this nation, and make sure that as we rebuild our economy, everyone comes along."
Joe Biden said on Friday he had secured the delegates needed to clinch the Democratic nomination and face Donald Trump in November's US presidential election amid a pandemic, economic collapse and civil unrest.
Biden has been the only Democratic candidate left in the presidential race since early April, outlasting 28 other candidates for the top spot on the Democratic ticket.
